Welcoming a new puppy — the first 14 days

A calm, practical guide for the first two weeks. What to set up before they arrive, when to feed, and how to make crate time feel like a den, not a cage.

Welcoming a new puppy — the first 14 days

Before they arrive

Choose one room as the landing pad. A small space with a crate, a water bowl, and a soft mat is easier on a new puppy than the run of a whole house. Tape off cables, pop anything chewable above knee height, and lay down a wipeable rug.

The first 48 hours

Keep things quiet. No big introductions, no long car trips, no parties. Take them outside every 90 minutes — yes, even at night — and praise the moment a wee lands outside.

Feeding rhythm

Most puppies under 12 weeks eat four small meals a day. Use a slow-feeder bowl if they inhale food in under a minute — it slows them down and reduces the post-meal hiccup wobbles.

Crate as a den, not a cage

Open door, soft blanket, a chew toy or a stuffed Kong. Feed inside the crate. Never use it as punishment. After a week, most puppies will choose the crate over the sofa for naps.

When to call the vet

Within the first week, even if everything looks fine — bring the kit guide with you, ask about the worming schedule and the first vaccinations.
